 Dixieland Fake Book

There are no commercially published Dixieland fake books. So here's mine: an affordable, bandstand-usable book that helps keep this music alive by enabling more musicians to learn and play the tunes.

"I think your fake book is the best I've seen.  It's a shame that it's taken this long to get one out that is accurate.  You've really done a beautiful job with this one, and I am grateful to you for sending it to me.  I recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn the old tunes.  Many, many thanks."
--Dan Levinson (Leader of the Roof Garden Jass Band, clarinet and sax player on many trad CDs.)

I recently ordered David's fake books, and they are awesome ... so well done, and SO easy to read!!  If anyone is looking for sources for some new tunes, or even old tunes ... I highly recommend these treasures!!!  I found tunes that I had  forgotten about years ago..."

The Sheik's Dixieland Fake Book, Volume 1:

  • Comb-bound 81/2 x 11 inch book
  • 263 tunes, including those on "Dixieland Must List" (which is included in the book) and many more to grow on. Includes the multi-strained classics that often have 2 pages; short tunes are 2-3 per page
  • all the usual tunes the public-at-large loves and requests, including some 1920s pop and sing-along tunes
  • "hard core" trad classics aficionados love, in versions that will tell them you know the records--with some emphasis on Louis Armstong, Bix Beiderbecke, Mugsy Spanier's 1939 Ragtimers, with several 1923 King Olivers
  • classic female vocal tunes, male novelty vocals
  • practical tunes (Star Spangled Banner, Hail to the Chief) often needed on commercial gigs.
  • performance notes--routines, suggested tempos, some alternate chordings
  • authoritative--I've used the best sources available, including sheet music, vintage published arrangements, and transcribed all or parts of many tunes from the original records
  • classic solos transcribed from the records
  • Using this book only, you can organize a band and please your audiences, offering clients and musicians a wide variety of tunes.

There are no definitive melody lines for some of these tunes, so it has been necessary to transcribe portions of the original recordings; some King Oliver tunes, such as Chattanooga Stomp and Snake Rag, are extremely difficult to work with, and melody lines often had to be interpolated rather than merely transcribed. Some famous solos such as Dodds' version of the classic High Society clarinet solo, Armstrong's out chorus to Cakewalkin' Babies, Mugsy Spanier's out chorus to Big Butter and Egg man have been transcribed, as have some classic breaks.

Generally, the chords and routines will be the same as in D-Cup Dixie Chords, but in many cases The Sheik has used other sources, added verses, etc., so that there are some differences between the two.

Lyrics:   The Sheik has put lyrics at the bottom of the pages where space permitted. However, many of the best vocal tunes and female vocal show-pieces, are verse-chorus tunes with insufficient space on the page. These are on separate sheets, available FREE via e-mail after you place your order.   NOTE:  No paper copies or lyrics pages are available.  E-mail only.   Click here to view sample lyrics page.
